Are You Cool?

I Already Feel LIke A Failure

Sonia and Johnny Truant speak about being ‘cool’ on their blogs.

What if I’m not cool?

Okay, I’m not cool and I just don’t come across as cool on my blog.

What do I do?

That’s the thread I started on a new membership site about how to blog.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much of a response… you know… being a rather uncool guy myself.

What a response I got.

Wow!

In just over five hours there’s four pages of replies.

The guys and girls on that new forum are certainly cool.

There are so many theories on what exactly is cool.  A few I never really thought of, but they do make plenty of sense.

And I was just wondering what YOU think.  What is cool to you?

I don’t mean what as in a physical thing, but the idea.  Do you think you’re cool?  I mean that in a nice way, of course.

Do others think you’re cool, and in what way?  Do they tell you?  Do they say what they think makes you cool?

And, if you think you’re cool – and if others think you’re cool – how do you feel about that?

I’d love to get your opinion on this surprisingly popular subject.

  • I think that a part of being "cool" is being able to ignite something in other people. The "cool" people in high school were those that other kids wanted to be like. They saw their popularity, their nice clothes and their attitudes (or whatever made them "popular" in the first place), and they wanted that for themselves.

Your best bet in being "cool" in the social media world is to have something or be something attractive that people want to emulate. Whether its your passion for what you do or the way that you show people that you really care about them, I think you definitely have a greater chance of success (in other words...of motivating people to action) if you're "cool."

So what you're saying is, 'cool' is being a leader?
  • I think the only cool anyone really needs to be is cool under pressure, which means stay level headed. Other than that, just be yourself. I'm glad you posted this in the forum and it is very timely because I am working on blog post about this topic right now. It should be released tomorrow.

    Keep on being awesome.

    Adam,

Let me know when you're post is done. I'd love to see your version on this topic.

I found the original reference in the audio offensive. I have never been cool - in cool in my part of the world means being part of the in-crowd - usually by bagging and demeaning those that arenot of the right age/size/sex/colour/religon etc.

I thought the subsequent discussion on your post fairly illuminating - bascially if there is a enough fluff you can make a topic anything you want to be - certainly the defintion of "cool" as helping people is a brand new one on me!

The bigger unasked question I thought was why do people have so much time to discuss a play on words - how does that help their businesses?

Never thought of it as offensive, but I can see where you're coming from: It depends on what you're used to, or have been exposed to. Is that what you mean?

As with the last part, I think it does make a difference, not about the word, but about how to 'act' in writing. Basically because if you come across as not very likeable, people are more less likely to want anything to do with you. And that would hurt your business.

That's what I think, anyway. Would you agree?
